Foreign Minister takes part in 2nd Japan-Arab Political Dialogue

Manama, Apr. 1 (BNA): Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, today participated in the second session of the Ministerial Meeting of the Arab-Japan Political Dialogue, held virtually, with the participation of the foreign ministers of the Arab countries, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Secretary-General of the Arab League.

In his statement at the first session, the Minister of Foreign Affairs affirmed that Japan occupies an important position in East Asia at the political and economic levels, adding that the Arab-Japanese friendship has witnessed a major leap in the past years.

Dr. Zayani noted all sides’ endeavours to strengthen bilateral relations at all levels through this political dialogue which opens the way for an exchange of views on political issues of common interest, and addresses the challenges facing both sides, in order to achieve common interests and make of the Middle East a safe and stable region.

He added that this cannot be achieved without ensuring the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and the principles of international law and international legitimacy.

Dr. Zayani pointed out that the Middle East region is facing difficult challenges, the most prominent of which are: the conflicts in a number of Arab countries, such as Syria, Yemen and Libya, and the threat of terrorism and its extremist organisations to the security and stability of its countries, in addition to foreign interference in the internal affairs of the Arab States.

He added that the efforts of the countries of the region are continuing to establish peace and stability in the region, including the initiative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for a ceasefire in Yemen under the supervision of the United Nations, and support for a peaceful political solution to the Yemeni crisis in accordance with the internationally approved references.

The Foreign Minister said that regional and international cooperation in the field of maritime security and energy in this vital region is an important matter that should receive great attention, saying that the terrorist acts that have happened in the Middle East since 2019 to obstruct oil supplies and target oil tankers and installations represents a serious threat to energy security and to regional and international peace and security, which necessitates from the international community to assume its full responsibilities towards such practices.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs added that the Kingdom of Bahrain is following with great interest all the relentless efforts being made to stop the spread of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, stressing the need for full compliance with United Nations resolutions, which prohibit all activities that would exacerbate tensions in the region.

He stressed the need for constructive cooperation with those endeavours aimed at strengthening international peace and security and subjecting all nuclear programmes and activities in all countries to the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency, in order to ensure their safety and the absence of any transgressions from any country.

He noted that the world is witnessing the threat of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, stressing the importance of work to strengthen cooperation between the Arab and Japanese sides in exchanging experiences and coordinating and intensifying efforts to confront the pandemic and mitigate its economic, health and social impacts, and prepare for the post-pandemic phase.

He expressed hope that this session would contribute to pushing the Arab-Japanese relations towards broader horizons of cooperation and political coordination, and towards deepening relations between the two sides in various fields in order to serve the common interests and goals of both sides.

The meeting was attended by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Regional and GCC Affairs, Ambassador Waheed Mubarak Sayyar, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to Japan, Ahmed Mohammed Al Dossari, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the Arab Republic of Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Hisham Al Jowder,  Director of Arab Affairs, Ambassador Abdulaziz Muhammad Abdullah Al-Eid, Director of the Department of Afro-Asian Affairs, Ambassador Mona Abbas Mahmoud Radhi.
